We would like to welcome a couple new businesses to the Village of Duchess. Ducks Unlimited Canada will be opening an office on Centre Street and Cobblestone RV Park is welcoming campers.

The deadline for tax payments has come and gone… If you did not pay your 2012 property taxes: please be aware that a 10% penalty has been assessed against your property, and that tax recovery proceedings may be starting against your home.

Residential sewer rates will be going up $1.50 per month per connection. Commercial rates are also increasing, please call and we can tell you how this affects your bill.

Garbage Pickup

Garbage pickup has been great. A few minor adjustments need to be made, but all in all, it has gone smoothly.

· Bins need to be placed with the arrows, on the lid, pointed into the street.

· Bins need to be placed just next to the curb, on the street.

· Bins need to be far enough away from vehicles or other cans, so that the arms of the truck, may wrap around the bin to pick it up and place it back down.

· Garbage placed anywhere but inside the bin, will not be picked up.

· Please bag the garbage inside your bin, or it’s going to stink and/or blow away when the bin is dumped.

· Bins need to stay with the home they were placed at. Replacement bins will have a replacement cost.

A reminder that large items cannot be left out for pickup.

The Newell Regional landfill is approximately 10km south on highway 36. The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 9am – 4pm. In the winter, the Saturday hours change from 10-2.

Grass clippings can be dumped in the dump trailer at the Village office. Clippings must be dumped out of their bags or containers. Please check in at the office when you come in.

Recycling in Duchess

The Duchess recycle shed has proved to be one of the busiest in the County. The recycle shed accepts paper, tin cans, cardboard & plastic.

Glass, Styrofoam and Electronics cannot be accepted.
